Winds of change swirl for new Hurricane Livingston
Newmarket native trades hometown Hurricane jersey for Holland College maroon
CHARLOTTETOWN – John Livingston spent the majority of last season playing for his hometown Newmarket Hurricanes of the
Ontario Junior Hockey League.
This season, he’s playing for a different group of Hurricanes.
The 19-year-old has signed to play with the Holland College Junior Hurricanes for this season, and he couldn’t be happier about it.
“I’m looking forward to getting on the ice,” Livingston said.
Livingston said friends attending Holland College first told him about the Junior Hurricanes and the quality of the organization.
“I was interested in talking to the Hurricanes, and from hearing more about the program, it got me really excited,” Livingston said.
Livingston’s season also included a two-game stint with the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Hockey League.
In total, he registered six points in 22 games in his time between Newmarket and Summerside.
Livingston said his experience from last season should serve him well when he suits up for Holland College in the fall.
“I just think it will help me be a leader with some of the guys, and maybe help some of the guys who haven’t played junior hockey to adjust a little bit earlier,”Livingston said.
“It’s a bit more physical, and the guys are older, so it’s something to get used to. As long as you have strong leaders, I don’t think it’s anything hard to get used to.”
The six-foot, 180-pound forward said he considers himself a skill player with a physical component to this game.
“I like to play a fast, physical game, and hopefully that’s something that fits into the system.”
Livingston said he doesn’t see his game changing too much ahead of the new season.
“It’s hard to say what adjustments I’ll have to make before playing with some of the guys, but hopefully it’s smooth sailing the whole way.”
Livingston will get his first opportunity to work with the Hurricanes on Sept. 8, when they hold a dryland training session.
There is also an information meeting on Sept. 7 for anyone who has expressed interest in trying out for the team.
